Falling sick after Delhi trip: Is it dengue?

THE GHOST of dengue just refuses to go away. And this time, it's 'dengue capital' Delhi which is scaring people from Allahabad. While two local residents have fallen sick, after reportedly visiting Delhi, the others with minor ailments are turning to hospitals and private practitioners to ensure that they are not suffering from dengue.

On Sunday, two patients including Jamal Ahmed and 28-year-old Indra Kumar reported to the Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, with dangerously low platelet count and other dengue-like symptoms. Constable at PAC Naini, Jamal Ahmed was immediately hospitalised, who informed that he suffered from fever after returning from Delhi. Indra Kumar was also staying in Delhi, before he reported to the SRN Hospital with dengue-like symptoms, informed the hospital sources.

Similarly, a large number of patients with simple flu and viral fever have started to huddle outside the private clinics and hospitals to ensure that they are not suffering from dengue. "Many of the patients who are coming these days have visited Delhi in the past one month and now want to know whether they were suffering from dengue or chikungunya," said Dr DK Nigam, senior physician and former head of Department of Medicine.

Dr Nigam said it's not Delhi alone, but the local children who are studying outside and have fallen sick are also coming to the clinic. Most of them were found suffering from simple viral fever, but their panicky parents want to get all the tests done to confirm that their children were not suffering from dengue.

"The patients are definitely coming to the clinic, with dengue-like symptoms. But none of them were established cases and were found suffering from mild to moderate dengue-like symptoms. The more serious dengue patients with hemorrhagic and shock syndrome are probably getting admitted to the hospitals," he added.

Additional chief medical officer (Vector Borne Disease) Dr RB Singh said the local people who have visited Delhi recently were visibly panicked of contracting the dengue virus. "The two suspected dengue patients who reported to the SRN Hospital, admitted to have travelled to Delhi. But it's only after test, they will be declared confirm dengue cases. The people in Allahabad are also falling sick due to dengue, so it's not necessary these two patients contracted the infection in Delhi only," he added.
