A scene outside Yerawada jail on Monday resembled the atmosphere when actor Sanjay Dutt was brought to the jail on August 2.
After news of Dutt getting bail spread, excited fans gathered in large numbers outside the jail. The police were on their toes controlling the crowd and also resorted to a mild lathicharge as the crowd was disrupting traffic near the jail.
Gokhale Nagar resident Ganapat Bhole, an ardent fan of Dutt, was a part of the crowd. “I want to have a glimpse of him. From the day he has been brought here, I am coming here every evening.” Another fan Bipin Cholakia was quarrelling with the police when they did not allow him inside the jail compound. “I just want to meet Sanjubaba. Please let me in.”
Inside the jail, Dutt’s bail created a furore among other inmates. “I wanted to meet him at least once. But now the prospects look bleak,” said an undertrial, who didn’t want to be named.
Dutt will have to spend another night in the jail as the court’s release warrant did not reach the prison office before 6 p.m. — the time when it closes. “Before the jail office closed, the copy of Sanjay Dutt’s release order had not arrived. The copy will be routed at Yerawada jail from the TADA court,” Ravindra Kedari, Deputy Director General (prison) told the Hindustan Times.
Dutt was brought here from Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail on August 2. He was kept in special barrack 3 along with his friend Yusuf Nulwalla.
