Farveez Maharoof caught the fancy of the selectors by his performances as Under-19 captain. It ensured that he got a foothold in the Sri Lanka team bound for Zimbabwe. He is an exciting all rounder with a fast bowling action. As a lower middle order batsman he is a useful player in the team.

Being honed for the 2007 World Cup, his climb to the top has been steady. He first played Sri Lanka Under-15's, Under-17's and Under-19's, and led the Under-19 team on four tours, including the 2004 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh. A prolific school career for Wesley College, playing for their first XI for five years, his highest score stands at 243 and best bowling figures include 8 for 20.

At the recently concluded Asia Cup in which his team emerged winners, Maharoof picked up a couple of wickets and later troubled the visiting South African team with his swinging deliveries.
