Fashionably tame

A common fallacy that is widely prevalent is that if you happen to be a fashion designer, the journey to the Capital’s P3P list just becomes easier.

Many feel, hiring a PR agency, roping in some models for a fashion show, and throwing in drinks and snacks for the guests are all that you need to have a rocking fashion do. And if you have ensured as much, whoever cares about fashion — the collection can take a backseat as long as you have the right tamasha going.
The recent show hosted by the fashion house, Déjà Vu, gave us exactly that feeling. The show presented the new wedding line by designer Sanjay Malhotra. But barring a few outfits, the line was routine — the kind that’s churned out by

designers by the dozen. Of course, the line wasn’t all trash, just that there was nothing new or spectacular that would elicit a reaction. Incidentally, although Malhotra has been on the fashion scene for nearly eight years now, this was a just his second fashion show.
The saving grace for the designer was the wearability of the clothes on display. From saris to lehngas, and from churidar kurtas to kurtis worn with pants, the line was extremely wearable.
In keeping with the current trends there was a lot of play with crystal and beads. However, the part that was most interesting was the use of fur and leather on the lehngas and saris. As for the colours, Malhotra chose to stay away from earthen tones, using the entire palette.
Talking about the collection the designer said: “The idea is to have drama in the collection but I do not want the clothes to look ostentatious. The clothes in my collection are for the woman of today. I have tried to make them contemporary, and yet timeless.” Maybe, that bit makes up for the lack of newness in his line.
