1996 - A Boeing 757 charter jet carrying 189 people plunged into the sea off the Dominican coast, killing all aboard.
1999 - King Hussein of Jordan died from cancer after ruling since 1952. Crown Prince Abdullah became king.

2003 - A powerful car bomb wrecked Club El Nogal, one of the most exclusive clubs in Bogota, killing at least 33 people.
2003 - Augusto Monterroso, Guatemalan writer and an acclaimed master of the short story, died. He won Spain's Prince of Asturias prize for literature in 2000. He was 81.
