US stocks ended lower on Tuesday after a Federal Reserve statement accompanying its expected pause in interest-rate hikes stirred concern about slowing economic growth.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 47.39 points, or 0.43 percent, to end unofficially at 11,171.67. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 4.15 points, or 0.33 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,271.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 11.57 points, or 0.56 percent, to close unofficially at 2,060.93.
