Fierce encounter between Naxals, security forces in Maharashtra

A fierce encounter broke out on Friday morning between the naxalites of CPI (Maoist) and security forces near Bondegaon jungle under Salekasa tehsil in Gondia district, bordering Chhattisgarh, some 250 kms far from eastern part of Maharashtra.

A fierce encounter broke out on Friday morning between the naxalites of CPI (Maoist) and security forces near Bondegaon jungle under Salekasa tehsil in Gondia district, bordering Chhattisgarh, about 250 kms far from eastern part of Maharashtra.

The incident occurred around 8.00 am when jawans of C-60, who were patrolling in Bondegaon jungle, were suddenly attacked by the hiding naxalites. However, police force overpowered the naxalites within few hours as additional force came to rescue them.

The armed naxalites, numbering around 50-60, attacked the force. The encounter continued till 2 pm.

"No one on the police side was injured in the encounter," informed Chandrashekhar Meena, the district police superintendent.

Meena claimed that at least half a dozen naxalites were injured in the encounter. "Maoists might have carried away their bodies," said Meena, adding that huge arms, ammunition, and few sets of wilkie-talkies were seized from the site.

It is said that three dalams of the region, including Salekasa dalam were involved in the encounter. It seems that Naxalites of Maharashtra, who are very active in border district of Gadchiroli, are also shifting its base in Gondia district.

Search operations against naxalites are on are on in the area, Meena further informed.
