From Wednesday, tax assesees will be able to file their income tax returns at post offices as well. Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) MH Kherawal said on Monday that 2,000 post offices across the country have been designated to accept IT return forms from July 26.
There will be no charge levied for availing this facility.
The tax department has also extended the deadline for filing tax returns to October 31 from July 31 for those filing non-auditable accounts.
Non-auditable accounts are furnished by businesses with annual turnover of upto Rs 40 lakh per annum and professionals with income upto Rs 10 lakh per annum.
However, the deadline for salaried individuals and those deriving income from properties and capital gains has not been extended. These sections will have to file returns by July 31.
The department has also notified new return forms – Form No 1 (for corporate tax payers), Form No 2 (for non-corporate tax payers having business income), Form No 3 (for non-corporate tax payers not having business income) and Form No.3B (for fringe benefits).
The new forms are comprehensively designed so as to do away with all kinds of attachments and facilitate electronic filing.
The new forms were designed by the CBDT after consultations with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Kherawal said.
