This is for the first time that the Director of the Institute, Dr RP Singh, allowed a book club having a vast collection of literature, both English and Hindi. He also provided the first consignment of new and interesting books to the club this week. The HBTI has a library but a book club with fiction was being demanded for a long time.

The new books include novels of famous writers and the students are happy that now they will be able to enjoy the holidays by reading interesting books of their choice.A senior student of the Institute Abhishek Rajput told the HT that the need for a book club with fiction was long felt but the idea could not be implemented. However, the efforts of the students and the cooperation of the director of the institute helped in setting up the book club.

There are a number of books by eminent writers to cater to all tastes, like Paul Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ and Dan Brown’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’, which are avidly read by most new students. For senior students, there are the literary works of famous English and Hindi writers. Students who like to read Charles Dickens, W. H. Lawrence, Annie Frank, Jane Austen etc can also go through the works of. Rabindra Nath Tagore, Mulk Raj Anand, Arundhati Roy, Taslima Nasreen, Amartya Sen and many others.

The inclusion of Sushmita Sen’s ‘The Butterfly’ and Premchand’s novels in the collection are an added attraction for book lovers. What is more, the ongoing controversy over ‘Vande Mataram’ has made many students keen on reading Anandmath written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Till now, there was no reader of the book at the Institute.

According to convenor of the Literary Council Vandana Kaushik, besides the purchase of books from the budgetary allocation to the Literary Sub-Council, the students have decided to donate their own books to enrich the book club in the near future. According to Abhishek, so far they had no option but to read text books, scientific journals and periodicals in the library, which made tedious reading. But now with the book club, they can while away their leisure hours with light reading.
