Nobody was injured in the incident, which occurred on Thursday night at Dhupguri Station under Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway, a release by the railway said at Guwahati.
The train, bound for Guwahati, stopped at Dhupguri as per schedule shortly after 11.30 pm when smoke was found bellowing out of the parcel van, Divisional Railway Manager, Alipurduar, Arjun Rakshit said.
The van was immediately detached from the train and the fire was brought under control. The contents of the van were destroyed in the fire, he said.
The quantum of loss cannot be estimated immediately, he said.
The train was allowed to resume its onward journey after two hours.
The fire was probably caused by a short circuit, the release said.
The Alipurduar DRM has ordered an investigation to find the exact cause of the fire.
