Five acquitted in 2006 Navi Mumbai bank dacoity case

Five persons, accused of attempting to rob a bank and killing a police officer, were today acquitted by the Thane sessions court.

Additonal Sessions Judge P H Mali acquitted Naresh Thakur, T B Raja, Karan Yadav, Vinesh Shetty and Bantu Palla, all of them charged under section 396 of Indian Penal Code (dacoity with murder).

They were accused of attempting to rob a branch of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank in the neighbouring Navi Mumbai on October 18, 2006.

A police officer who rushed to the spot while the robbery was underway was killed and another was badly injured when the robbers fired on them, but the robbery was foiled.

Sub-inspector Babasaheb Adhav died while Head Constable Dipu Maruti Karande was injured.

The court, however, held that prosecution failed to prove its case against the arrested accused.
