Heavy downpours triggered flash flooding that killed a 2-year-old boy and two other people and damaged dozens of humble homes on the outskirts of the Guatemalan capital on Sunday.

Before dawn, a swelled river washed out a bridge connecting Guatemala City with poor neighborhoods just to the west and flood waters carried away three vehicles. Two people drowned after their car was swept away, said Ricardo Molina of the national natural disaster response team.

In the nearby neighborhood of Lo de Bran, 10 homes were damaged by flooding and 2-year-old Estuardo Rivas drowned after high waters engulfed his family's home, Guatemala City's fire department said in a statement.

Molina said authorities opened an emergency shelter in the area to temporarily house those who lost their homes.

Heavy rains have pounded the capital during the past week, triggering small mudslides and flooding. There were no rain-related fatalities until Sunday, however.
