Latest price data showed that food inflation for the week ended December 10 stood at 18.65 per cent, lower than the 10-year peak of 19.95 per cent recorded the previous week.

There has been a sharp rise in supplies of potato in recent weeks. In November, 2.74 million quintals of potato arrived in India’s wholesale markets, a sharp rise from October’s 2.11 million quintals.

“Arrival of the new potato crop has started, easing price pressure. If the current situation stays, we might see a decline in potato price,” S. Bhonde, additional director of Nasik-based National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation told HT.

Planning Commission deputy chaiperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia had on Wednesday said prices would start easing by January as supplies shore up.
