Sheeba Thomas, a former airhostess with Virgin Atlantic, resisted a robbery attempt and paid with her life late on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old was shot in the chest from point-blank range, when she slapped one of the assailants.
Sheeba was living with her friends Nishant and Aditi at a rented house in Sector 49. She had quit her airhostess’ job and joined Nemesis Solutions as vice-president. Nishant is the company director, police said.
Sheeba was on her way home when four robbers on two motorcycles flagged her down at an intersection in Sector 32, said G Shrotriy, Station House Officer of Sector 20 police station. “When the attackers asked her to come out of the car She began arguing with them,” he said.
Sheeba reportedly refused to give in to their demands. “She even pushed and slapped one of the robbers. The attackers were agitated and one of them took out his revolver and shot her in the chest. She collapsed on the spot,” said Rakesh, an eyewitness.
Although Sheeba’s purse, laptop, watch and other valuables were kept in the car, the robbers, interestingly, decided to take only her mobile phone. “It is weird. This does not fit into our theory of robbery as the motive behind the attack,” said an officer.
The police questioned Nishant. The servant, Santosh Kumar, locked himself in the house till afternoon. “He did not even open the door for us. Later, he told us that Nishant had asked him not to allow anyone inside the house,” said an officer.
