Four killed in heavy rains, floods in Garhwal

Incessant monsoon rains and floods have claimed four lives and damaged several houses in Garhwal region of Uttaranchal where the water level in most of the rivers was rising alarmingly today.

Incessant monsoon rains and floods have claimed four lives and damaged several houses in Garhwal region of Uttaranchal where the water level in most of the rivers was rising alarmingly on Sunday.

Two children were killed in heavy rains in Sahaspur area of Dehra Dun district, District Magistrate Radha Raturi said.

A man was buried alive in Mussoorie when his house collapsed under the impact of heavy rains sweeping Uttaranchal since yesterday.

One rain-related death was reported from Budakedar area of Tehri district.

Nearly a dozen houses were damaged in Maldevata area following heavy foods in Song river, a tributary of Ganga, Raturi said.

Nearly 100 animals also perished in heavy rains and floods in Garhwal district.

Meanwhile, the water level in most rivers in Garhwal, including Ganga, Ramganga, Song and other rivers, was rising alarmingly, official reports said.

Uttaranchal Disaster Management Department chief Sohan Lal said the government was gearing up to meet the challenge posed by heavy rains.
