The incident came to light on Saturday night when Sarat Patra, who works for a private company in Bhubaneswar, returned home at Chandpur village in the district and found his wife, two children, aged nine and five, and his elderly father lying in a pool of blood.

Police rushed to the spot after being informed by Patra and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The police are looking for the assailants and trying to ascertain if robbery or old enmity was the cause behind the cold-blooded murders.

Nayagarh superintendent of police Bhagyadhar Behera said the assailants were suspected to have barged into the house by breaking back door of the house. “They killed the adults with a sharp edged weapon and smothered the children using a pillow,” Behera said.
