On Friday evening, the courtyard of the Turkish Ambassador’s residence came alive after a scintillating performance by Tanyeli. As the snacks – a mix of Turkish and Indian hors de oeuvres – were circulated, the guests geared up to cheer the belly dancer from Turkey. Towards the end of her performance, she sprang a surprise with her version of Dola re… from Devdas. “I eat, drink and sleep Devdas,” said Tanyeli.
She has even done a shoot dressed in Indian attire for her CD cover but she has no plans of venturing into Bollywood. Although Zerrin, the Ambassador’s wife, feels that Tanyeli looks a lot like Aishwarya Rai, but Tanyeli is not biting the bait. “The last time I visited India I was approached by a leading production house but I don’t have time for anything else as I am very popular in my country. I keep shuttling between Turkey and Australia,” announced the mother of two.
Tanyeli hosts a popular dance show in Istanbul and runs a dance academy too. “Our dance is an amalgamation of nuances borrowed from Russia, Poland and Egypt. The emphasis is on expression, which is something you don’t find in Egyptian dancing. Some day, I would like to learn Kathak.” Inshallah! Also spotted, besides the many diplomats: Danseuse Shovana Narayan, industrialist Kamal Meattle with wife Anita and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
