IT’S HUNDRED per cent. Yes! The Lucknowites want schools and colleges to promote the King of all sports ( football). Reacting enthusiastically to the Lucknow Live’s HT Connect, the city polled 100 per cent in favour of promoting soccer in colleges. The query was: Should colleges promote soccer?

And the Lucknowites proved that even after a serious domination of gentlemen’s game cricket globally, they wanted to play football!
“It’s not because the FIFA World Cup is beginning now. I find the game of soccer the best among all the sports, in which an individual can ensure his all-around development, including best body fitness,” said former Deputy Director Sports Neeru Kapoor.
“Undoubtedly, gymnastics is the mom of all exercises, but football is the king of all sport,” says Kapoor, adding, “Development of sports at the school-level can better UP’s prospects at national and international levels.”
“Other entertainment avenues have diminished the interest of youths towards sports. But, it doesn’t mean that school and colleges should stop promoting sports there,” says Kapoor.
District Football Association (DFA) secretary Kanhaya, while praising the Hindustan Times’ efforts towards promoting soccer in the city, claims that the DFA must do its best for the promotion of the game here. But, the basic responsibility to generate interest among youths lies on the school and colleges.
“There were golden days of Lucknow football, because a few schools and colleges used to do everything for the promotion of the game. But, now all most all the schools have stopped taking interest to promote game,” said Kanhaya, who said that as a DFA secretary he was ready to give all his support to the school/colleges for the development of the game.
Footballer Mukesh Bahadur while advocating for regular training of soccer in all the schools/colleges of the city, said that being a cheap game (as far as expenses are concerned) the schools/colleges should take special interest for the promotion of this.
“Most of the schools/colleges have big playing arena, but they support cricket only, which evolves too much money and time. It’s just 90-minute battle full of excitement and gives you better opportunity to do your physical training well.”
