18-year-old Khamosh married 21-year-old Sumat, who belonged to the same caste. The match was opposed by her family.

Khamosh was strangled to death by her father Ramesh Chand and brother Ankush on April 3 at Nagla Kandwara village in Baghpat district, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajpal Singh said in Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday, adding they later burnt her body.

Earlier, a case of murder by unknown persons was registered in this regard by the police.

But during investigations, the father and brother confessed to the crime and admitted that they murdered the girl for tarnishing the family's image.

The duo, arrested on Monday, were sent to jail, Singh said.

Earlier on May 12, a newly-wed bride and her mother-in-law were killed and the groom seriously injured by the relatives of the girl in Punjab's Tarn Taran district in the honour killing case.
