Girl saved in suicide attempt, man drowns

A man and a minor girl from Karontha village in the district on Saturday attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Jawahar Lal Nehru canal at Myna-Sunaria village. Villagers saved the girl but his paramour Ankit, 20, was swept away by the water's strong current.

Sadar station house officer (SHO) Satinder Singh said a team of divers had been deployed to search for Ankit's body.

Sources said the duo wanted to marry, but their families did not approve of the alliance. Marriage in the same village is considered a taboo in Haryana.
