‘‘TEACHING SHOULD not be considered just a profession, but service to mankind, as it has the power to reform society and make better human beings,’’ said Governor Dr Balram Jakhar. He was speaking as chief guest at the fourth Mata Gujri award function held under the aegis of Mata Gujri Foundation at the college of the same name at Pipliyapala, AB Road, on Saturday.

Past three recipients of the award, along with this year’s recipient, educationist Dr Charanjeet Kaur from Bhopal were present. Jakhar said that there was much to learn from the lives of great persons and incorporating the values they stood for in life had the potential of changing one for the better.

‘‘Traditional form of education had not lost its relevance, but it was facing continuous and ever-increasing assault by foreign mediums like television, which corrupted young and impressionable minds. Educationists, therefore, have dual responsibility of not only making their ward techno savvy and ready to compete in this globalised world, but also adhere to tradition and cultural values.’’

Jakhar said that as Chancellor of Universities he kept getting complaints against fictitious colleges, mostly B Ed and Medical, of having duped students of their money. Guest of honour Lieutenant General (retired) Sher Amir Singh said that the Foundation deserved praise for constituting an award named on a great woman for women excelling in various fields, as it served as inspiration for all.
