In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha to a specific question, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Suresh Pachouri said the retirement age of central government employees, raised from 58 to 60 years in May 1998, stands.

Discounting the argument that increasing the retirement age had only helped the employees avail themselves of their accumulated leave and not improved their productivity, the minister said no such adverse effect had come to the notice of the government.

Pachouri informed the house there were 3.4 million civilian employees on the central government's rolls as on March 1, 2004.
