Injury-hit England skipper Michael Vaughan admitted he was relieved to be back in the nets and batting again.

Vaughan underwent his first net session on Wednesday since returning from the India tour with a nagging knee injury.

He ended his long wait for a return to action with a 20-minute indoor net at Trent Bridge in Nottingham where the opening day of Yorkshire's County Championship match was washed out.

"It's the first net and it was nice to pick up a bat again," admitted Vaughan, who also jogged around the outfield several times without any obvious discomfort.

"It's early days and I'm just getting used to jogging again — I'm just hoping for a bit of luck now."

Since leading England to the Ashes last summer, Vaughan has suffered a series of injuries.

He missed the opening Test against Pakistan in Multan because of a recurrence of his knee problems and although he returned for the final two Tests in the series, flew home before the one-day series to have surgery.

That operation was supposed to cure him before the tough trip to India, but after the opening warm-up match in Mumbai he suffered a further recurrence and was forced home again.

The diagnosis on his return was that further surgery would not be required and he would be cured through rest and in his absence a patched-up England side earned a 1-1 draw in the Test series under Andrew Flintoff's captaincy.

But despite Wednesday's return, it is only three weeks before the opening Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's and Vaughan is unlikely to recover in time to lead the side out.
