Ali Hossain, who used to allegedly torture his wife for more dowry, hurled bombs at the house of his father-in-law in Gurdah village in North 24 Parganas district on Friday night, damaging the roof and wall, police said.

When the villagers came out hearing the explosions, Ali and his henchmen fled the scene. His wife lodged a complaint with the police Saturday.

Ali's wife had moved in with her parents unable to bear her husband's beatings. But Ali continued to pester the family for money and wanted to take back his wife.

After an altercation with his father-in-law on Friday over dowry, Ali attacked the house with bombs.
