There are few moments each year when all of us can put aside our everyday challenges to come together in shared concerns and find a public emotional outlets.

Children suffered extensively this year. The school fire in Tamil Nadu's Kumbakonam town in July saw the rest of the nation stunned into silence at the magnitude and needlessness of the tragedy. School kids were again the victims in a horrifying hold up in troubled Ossetia's Beslan, where over 350 died.

Many public figures breathed their last this year too. While India will feel the loss of PV Narasimha Rao, MS Subbulakshmi, Shobha Gurtu, Vijay Anand, Mulk Raj Anand, Nissim Ezekiel, SB Chawan and many others, the death of Yasser Arafat possibly marked the end of an era globally.
