Former MP and a senior lawyer Ehsan Jaffri and 38 others were killed inside the Gulbarg Society on February 28, 2002 by nearly 8000-strong mob which has responded to the Gujarat bandh called by the VHP to protest the Godhra train inferno the previous day.

All the 19 houses in the Gulbarg Society were also ransacked and burnt by the mob out to avenge the killing of 58 kar sewaks in the Sabarmati Express fire at Godhra.
