Gunmen attacked two mini buses, killing 22 people and injuring three on late Saturday in a village near Baquba, 60 km northeast of Baghdad, an Iraqi security source said.
The gunmen also kidnapped three girls in the attack that took place in Ain Laila village, the source added.
A security source had earlier said that Iraqi police on Sunday morning found 19 corpses from the village with gunshot wounds.
Twelve of the corpses were of university students, while seven were of elderly men, the source said.
In a separate attack, four government employees were killed and two others injured on Sunday when they were ambushed by gunmen east of Baghdad, Iraqi police said.
An armed group opened fire on the employees as they were getting out of a vehicle carrying them to their workplace in a telecommunications centre in Badalat al-Talebeya, the source said.
Some 104 Iraqis were exposed to poisonous gas that leaked after an explosion in a water purification plant in Hillah, 100 km south of Baghdad.
The explosion took place overnight while residents, including women and children, were asleep on rooftops near the plant, the source said.
Meanwhile the Iraqi interior ministry spokesman Adnan Abdul Rahman denied reports that four Russian diplomats kidnapped in Baghdad on Saturday had been released.
The Russian foreign ministry also denied the reports.
Iraqi television earlier reported that the four Russian diplomats who were snatched by gunmen in western Baghdad had been released.
