A widow from the city has slapped a harassment charge against a top official of income tax based in Bhopal for threatening them in support of his friend.
In her complaint, Usha Mangal, 50, alleged that assistant director in the investigation of income tax, Vijay Soni misutilised his official post for favouring money lender Bagdev, who is close to Soni. The complaint was addressed to Union finance minister, chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), chief commissioner of income tax and director general of investigation wing (Bhopal), director general of police (Madhya Pradesh) and superintendent of police (CBI, Bhopal).
Taking cognizance of Mangal’s complaint, the office of the director general of income tax (vigilance), New Delhi has also initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Mangal, in her complaint, alleged that her son Pradeep Mangal was dashed a notice under section 131 of the income tax and was summoned to Aaykar Bhavan, Bhopal on November 15, 2011.
“My son was asked to reach the office of Soni. When he went there, Soni immediately asked him to return Rs 90 lakh of Bagdev, resident of Republic Colony, Ayodhya by-pass road,” she said.
The officer said that he was not interested in my son’s file. To which my son said that he was not aware of the issue he was referring to, she said.
The letter says that after her son’s reply, Soni became offensive and called income tax officer Shahji to his cabin and asked him to make a search warrant against my son and bring all the papers from his residence along with his younger brother Naveen.
Shahji and his team rushed to her house and started searching for papers without any search warrant. When Usha resisted, the team left the spot and took both her sons along with them.
In the name of inquiry her sons were held hostage for several hours. Soni told them that he would send them to jail through enforcement directorate (ED) officials, she said in her complaint.
Speaking to HT, Usha Mangal said, “Vagdev and my husband were good friends and they used to finance builders et al in their projects. My husband died all of a sudden. I don’t know if he owed some money to Vagdev, my husband never told me anything about such matters but Soni is now asking us to repay Rs. 90 lakh to Vagdev, using his power to frighten us. I did complain against Soni but at this juncture I won’t reveal anything further as my kids are small and I don’t want them to land m in any trouble. I will speak about it at an appropriate time,” she said. One of Usha’s son has just completed his graduation.
All attempts to contact Soni including phone calls, SMSes and visit to his office proved futile as he refused to pick up the phone or talk in person.
