On the other hand they can let off a person aiding and abetting a heinous crime just because of the intervention of a high profile politician.

Pradeep Tripathi, the pradhan of Narayanpur Basahi village in Karchana has been set free by the cops reportedly following the intervention of a local MP despite his confession that his motorcycle which he had purchased in the name of another person was used in the murder of head constable Ashok Pandey in Civil Lines on Monday.

During interrogation Pradeep also admitted having given shelter to Vinay Singh, the criminal from Varanasi who is reported to have been on the second motorcycle with another criminal at the time of the head constable's brutal killing. Vinay, according to Pradeep, had taken away the motorcycle from his house a day before the murder.

Pradeep, it may be mentioned, is accused in four murder cases also. If he is to be believed, he rushed to Lucknow on getting the news of the murder and sought help from the MP pleading innocence in the case.

In his own words Vinay, the criminal often used to visit his house and borrow his mobike. He also knew that Vinay was a criminal of Varanasi who used to take shelter in his house in order to stall his arrest at the hands of cops. Then why at all after knowing so much about Vinay he kept on lending his mobike?

Police sources said, Pradeep knows every thing and if they are given a free hand he will spill the beans.

But their hands are tight because some senior police officers want Pradeep to be set free of all charges, said the sources on condition of anonymity.

If not in the main crime Pradeep should be booked in two cases. One under Section 216 IPC for giving shelter to a criminal and the other under Section 120 B for lending the motorcycle which is used in killing a person, said a police officer.

When contacted SP Trans Yamuna KK Asthana said, he had no idea about the whereabouts of Pradeep Trpathi after his interrogation at a police station. SSP Vijay Singh Meena could not be contacted despite repeated attempts on his mobile for his version on the Pradeep Tripathi's letting off.
