The Delhi High Court on Thursday allowed foreign news agencies - Associated Press, Agence France Presse and Reuters - to cover the day-to-day trial of the December 16 gang rape.
The court, however, did not allow independent foreign journalists to cover the court proceedings. The order came on a petition filed by a group of foreign correspondents. On March 22, the high court had lifted the media gag imposed by the trial court, but had allowed only national dailies to cover the trial.
The Delhi police had opposed the permission, saying that a section of foreign media had already irresponsibly published the name of the victim in complete violation of the court's gag orders.
But justice Rajiv Shakdher was of the view that at least news agencies can be allowed to cover the trial for the time being but made it clear that "if they commit any violations, the same kind of rigours applicable on national media reporters like cancellation of accreditation will be applicable to them".
