Vinod Kumar (32), a small retailer, took his two daughters Monika (9) and Manisha (5) with him on Tuesday evening. Around 9.30 p.m. the police informed the family members that Kumar had thrown his two daughters into the canal, 2 kilometres from the house.

While Manisha was saved by a local boy, Monika’s whereabouts were not know. Police said she is feared to have drowned. The police have arrested the father.

“The girls were shouting. We immediately rushed for help. A local boy saved one child but the other is feared drowned,” said Satish Sharma, an eyewitness of the incident and caretaker of a temple near the canal. Later, area residents beat up Kumar and handed him over to the police.

A priest said Kumar visited him a couple of times and asked how he can have a son.

While the mother was in shock, the rescued child could not speak.

“Last night, my daughter told me that her father threw both of them into the canal. We have five daughters and no son and my husband was upset with this. He was also upset with the current loss in his earnings,” said Mamta, Kumar’s wife.

“He was under the influence of alcohol when he threw them in the canal and had had an altercation with his wife,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar.
