Marine engineers are responsible for the management and control systems that are essential for safe voyages and operations. Being a very technical and highly responsible job, a marine engineer also has to take decisions for selecting the ship’s machinery which may include anything from diesel engines, steam turbines, gas turbines or nuclear reactors in such a way so as to derive maximum efficiency while minimising costs.
The major advantage of this field is that students pursuing a career in marine engineering have nearly 100 per cent placement rates because of the great demand nationally and internationally.
Call it the predictable growth in oversea trades, the security reasons or the desire to enhance a country’s natural resources, all have played an equal role in providing huge job opportunities to marine engineers.
And if the idea of spending months aboard a ship makes you a little queasy, don’t fret; talented marine engineers are required on shore too. Another area that is currently seeing growth by leaps and bounds is port security.
Being one of the most payable of all engineering fields one can expect to earn fat salaries. As a marine engineer you can easily fetch an initial salary of about Rs 50,000-60,000 keeping in mind your qualifications and talent.
This career gives handsome opportunities to fly abroad and earn somewhere around US $70,000 and more. With time and experience the earning soars up too. So, get set and sail towards a career in marine engineering.
