He got a bigger, albeit a more pleasant shock four days later - lying outside the main door of his house was a nicely wrapped package and in it was almost all of the missing gold with an apology note from the father of the thief.

The missing gold is worth around Rs 8 lakh.

The writer of the note explained that the reason his son robbed Radhakrishnan was to fund his (the father's) bypass surgery. Apologising for his son's action, the father sought forgiveness and also assured that the missing 48 gms would be returned in the next couple of days.

A flummoxed DSP KK Ibrahim said, "It is a peculiar case. We have screened nearby places to locate such a heart patient. We are also keeping a strict vigil on the house."

The police suspect someone who knew the family well might have had an afterthought after the robbery and planted this story to divert attention.

Meanwhile, Radhakrishnan has said if the case is genuine he will help fund the heart surgery.
