The CPI(M) leader has also asked the Prime Minister to make a statement in the Parliament regarding this issue.india Updated: May 08, 2006 19:41 IST
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat has asked the Prime Minister to make a statement in the Parliament on whether a ministerial group had exceeded its terms while finalising bids for modernisation of the Delhi and Mumbai airports.
In a letter to Manmohan Singh, Karat urged the government to put on hold the handing over of the Delhi and Mumbai airports to private companies till the matter was settled in the Supreme Court.
The apex court had last week admitted a petition from the Reliance group, which had challenged the Delhi High Court verdict upholding the central government's decision to hand over the modernisation to GMR-Fraport (for Delhi) and GVK-ACSA (for Mumbai) consortiums.
Stating that her party colleague Dipanker Mukherjee had sought an explanation from the group of ministers about the process of finalising the bid, Karat complained that Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had evaded a reply in the Rajya Sabha.
"It is quite unfortunate that accountability of executive to the Parliament is being undermined to an extent that one has to wait for judicial intervention for acts of omission or commission by the executive," the Rajya Sabha MP said in a letter.
"I therefore request you to kindly intervene and clarify the issue on the floor of the House before Supreme Court takes up the issue before June 1."
"I also hope that in line with UPA's pledge to provide transparent and accountable government, the handing over of Delhi and Mumbai airports would be kept on hold till the issue is clarified in parliament and clinched by highest judicial authority," Karat said.
