Nine tribal girl students were killed and 18 went missing when the portion of a four-storeyed residential school collapsed at Tichakpura village, about 100km from Surat town, on Saturday night.
The incident took place when the hostel of Adarsh Nivasi Shala constructed just before a year by the scheduled tribes welfare department of the state government collapsed.
District Magistrate Vatsala Vasudeva said nine bodies have so far been pulled out of the debris and 14 girls were injured.
She said there were a total of 330 students in the school in the predominantly tribal area and after a roll call 18 were missing.
The toll could have been higher had it not been for the dinner time when most of the students were in the mess in an adjacent building.
It being the Republic Day, many of the students had gone out of the hostels with their families and relatives, sources in the school said.
The children who sustained injuries were admitted to nearby Vyara Referral hospital and a private hospital in Vyara, a small town 10km away, officials said.
Anxious and sobbing relatives milled around the site of the incident as three cranes and rescue workers, aided by huge flood lights and gas cutters, rummaged through the debris looking for possible survivors and bodies.
A large number of people from the village and nearby areas have gathered at the spot even as rescue workers employed three cranes and six JCB machines to clear the debris.
