She is an English culinary goddess, known for whipping up exotic delicacies. TV anchor and food writer Nigella Lawson, 53, says that she particularly loves an Indian spice with which she has a personal connect. “My name itself is taken from an Indian spice that I am very fond of. It’s what you call ‘kalonji’,” she says with perfect pronunciation.

“I’m a great fan of Indian food. But, it is now very difficult to isolate ingredients as being particularly Indian, because English food is so influenced by Indian food, thanks to our shared history. I’ve grown up with a lot of spices that I now find hard to isolate as Indian. But, I do have a soft corner for Indian breads,” adds Nigella, whose new show will hit the small screen next month.

About her uncomplicated approach to cooking, she says, “I don’t think any of my food ever looks like it’s been done by an expert. It isn’t about expert technique. When I put food on the plate, I don’t want to arrange it like a plate decoration in a fancy restaurant.”
