Director IIT-K, Dr Sanjay G Dhande informed Hindustan Times that the proposal was discussed in detail at a recent meeting, which was attended by IIT-K professor VN Vyas, chairman Railway Board N Batra and director general of Research and Design Standard Organisation (RDSO) Lucknow, AK Rao.

Dr Dhande also proposed to start a regular course in “Inter Disciplinary M Tech for Railway Engineering” at the institute. Other members present in the meeting approved the idea and suggested to submit a proposal in this regard to the government.

Besides, it was also decided to create “Centres of Excellence” throughout the country to monitor technological developments in the railway sector. They also felt that a meeting at international level should be held annually to review major developments in the railway technology all over the globe and acquire the same for the Indian Railways.

Batra asked Dr Dhande to include earthquake engineering in the proposed M Tech course, as most of the railway tracks in the country passed through areas under high seismic zones.

Dr Dhande also informed the members about the progress of various programmes related to railway safety assigned to IIT-K on the occasion. Work on increasing efficiency of railway engines using Bio-diesel and displaying train movements on screen was under progress, he said.
