According to sources, barely an hour before forcible exit of medical superintendent Dr GB Gautam, the JRs held a meeting and decided to put their stand before Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the district magistrate and the college administration, on Monday.
Incidentally, all under-graduate, post-graduate and department heads of the medical college are unanimous that caste has no role to play in academics and the way, a few leaders including Dr Gautam have been spoiling the campus atmosphere by playing the caste-card has done no good to the medical college.
Somehow, the administration was informed about the increasing resentment among the JRs and in an effort to maintain peace in the college, the officials had forcibly removed Dr Gautam from the college premises.
The administration after getting the deteriorating health report of Dr Gautam, sitting on an indefinite hunger strike since February 2 following an altercation with junior doctors, had forcibly admitted him to the emergency of UHM Hospital on Sunday night.
Several department heads said that it was not expected from a level 4 officer of the Provincial Medical Services.
One of the most senior faculty of GSVM Medical College while talking to HT said, “College is a place of worship, here professionals are groomed irrespective of caste, here only caste is medico and the way Dr Gautam is spoiling the environment of the college we are left with no option but to show him the exit door.”
He added that anger among the medicos was spreading fast in the campus and the administration was asked to intervene before things could go out of the hands.
Ironically, when investigated several astonishing facts pertaining to Dr Gautam came to light. An inquiry report against Dr Gautam was submitted to the principal when the former was in-charge of a nursing hostel. Five nursing students on record made candid admission that Dr Gautam sought personal favour from them when the students went to him for some official work. The report was submitted to the college administration by a department head on December 9, 2004.
After the adverse report, Dr Gautam was immediately released from the charge and transferred to other department.
Meanwhile, Dr Gautam in his defence said, “All the inquiries against me are prejudiced and I still challenge all the charges framed against me.” He also said that after getting discharged from the hospital he would again sit on the indefinite hunger strike at the same place from where he was picked up.
