IMA observes strike, seeks action against chief proctor

AGITATED OVER the alleged manhandling of state secretary of Indian Medical Association Dr OP Tiwari by the security personnel of Banaras Hindu University during the Joint Entrance Examination on April 9, the members of the local chapter of IMA observed a one-day complete work boycott here in Varanasi on Wednesday.

Several members of IMA took out a procession from the IMA premises in Lahurabeer area to Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Jagat Ganj area. The IMA members were demanding legal action against BHU chief proctor Prof SK Singh for shielding the accused security personnel. The IMA members were raising slogans such as ‘IMA Zindabad’, ‘Kulpati Hosh Mein Aao’, ‘Chief proctor Murdabad’ etc.

It may be noted that there was a scuffle between the IMA state secretary Dr OP Tiwari and BHU security personnel during JEE on BHU campus on Sunday last.

Dr OP Tiwari had lodged an FIR against BHUcChief proctor and four other security personnel with Lanka police for alleged manhandling the same day. Dr Tiwari had escorted his daughter to the BHU for the JEE .

Later, the BHU authorities had taken disciplinary action against four security personnel and removed them for failing to control the situation on Monday. The BHU administration had also lodged an FIR against Dr OP Tiwari on the charges of trying to disturb the smooth conduct of the examination. A meeting of BHU proctorial board was convened on Tuesday in which the members condemned the confrontation of security personnel with the parents during the examination.

Secretary of local chapter of IMA Dr Sanjay Rai said that they wanted legal action against BHU chief proctor Prof SK Singh for shielding the accused security personnel. “We will not compromise on this issue and want the accused behind the bars”, said Dr Rai and claimed that around one thousands clinics and nursing homes remained closed in Varanasi, Chandauli and Mughalsarai on Wednesday.

He said that there was a meeting with District Magistrate late on Wednesday evening over this issue.

Prominent among those doctors who participated in the procession were IMA president Dr PS Pandey, Dr Mangesh Kumar, Dr Arvind Singh, Dr Kusum Chandra and Dr Ashok Rai.
