Independence Day celebrated amid fanfare in UP

The 62nd Independence Day was celebrated with much fanfare across Uttar Pradesh amid tight security arrangements.

The 62rd Independence Day was on Saturday celebrated with much fanfare across Uttar Pradesh amid tight security arrangements.

In Lucknow, Chief Minister Mayawati hoisted the national flag at Vidhan Bhawan during a ceremony, which was attended by ministers, bureaucrats and senior police officers.

Mayawati also presented Chief Minister's Excellent Service Police Medal to three police personnel. Those awarded the prestigious medal included Additional Director General vigilance Milkiat Singh.

Besides medals, a citation and cash reward were also given to kins of constable Shameem Ali and platoon commander of 42 PAC Beni Madhav Singh, who were killed during an encounter with dreaded dacoit Ghanshyam Kewat in Chitrakoot district in June this year.

Governor B L Joshi took guard of honour and hoisted the flag at Raj Bhawan.

Flag hoisting ceremony was held at all government offices, establishments and education institutions across the state.

Though an alert was sounded by the state police no untoward incident has been reported from any part of the state and celebrations passed off peacefully.
