India, France rock art meet begins

A THREE-day research seminar on rock art of India and France being organised by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and State Archaeological Directorate began here on Sunday. Eminent scholars active in the field of research on rock art are participating in the seminar.
Prominent art historian Prof Kapila Vatsyayan who was to inaugurate the seminar had to return due to ill health and her address was read out by Prof D N Tripathi.
The address emphasised on the need to develop the psychological viewpoint to understand the importance of Indian rock art. It also mentioned the importance of continuing research in the field.
French scholar Dr Dennis Vialou underlined the importance of rock art of India and France and said that there was a need of mutual cooperation to scientifically study the psychological aspect of the art. He expressed hope that the seminar would be important in this direction.
Eminent archaeologist Prof Radhakant Verma delivered the keynote address highlighting the detailed history of rock art in context of his four decades of experience in the field. He also spoke of the various problems, the style of studying, the chronology and importance of rock art.
Delivering the presidential address, Indian Council of Historical Research president Prof Dayanath Tripathi assured support from the council for conducting research and studies to solve various academic problems related to rock art.
In the technical session held in afternoon, scholars including Prof Dennis Vialou, Prof V H Sonawne, Manual Joseph and Dr A V Vialou read out research paper on various aspects of rock art. The session was chaired by Prof Verma.
The inaugural session was conducted by Dr Shabi Ahmed. ICHR member secretary Dr P K Shukla introduced the scholars including Dr Brigitte Delluc from France and Prof Sonawne, Prof Somnath Chakravarty, Prof Sadashiv Pradhan, Prof J L Badam, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya director Dr K K Basa, superintendent archaeologist of Bhopal circle of Archaeological Survey of India Mohammad KK, Prof J N Pal, A K Prasad, Giriraj Kumar, Prof Surajbhan and Dr Mahesh. The technical session on Monday will be conducted at Hotel Palash Residency from 10.00 am.
