Judge Marshall Y. Hockett raised the bail of the actor known for his role in the movie 40-Year-Old Virgin to more than double the $4 million that prosecutors had requested as he appeared on Wednesday in a packed courtroom, which included entertainment media from Los Angeles.

Bail initially had been set at $2 million for Malil (43). He is charged with attempted murder with allegations of use of a knife and causing great bodily injury to Kendra Beebe, a former girlfriend during an attack in her San Marcos home. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutor Steven Carver said in court that there is evidence that the assault was wilful and premeditated, San Diego Union Tribune reported.

Requesting that bail be raised to $4 million, he said Malil was a flight risk. In 2005, Malil was involved in a misdemeanour hit-and-run, showing his “tendency to run after a crime”, Carver said.
