Indian American Supriya Christopher, a US military veteran and mother of two, has lost the race for the Virginia State House of Delegates by a margin of 10 percent.
Christopher, a Democrat, who ran for an open seat in the heavily Republican 84th District in Virginia, won 44.3 percent of vote, while her opponent Sal Iaquinto won 55.5 percent as final election results came in tonight.
This at a time when Democrats won a surprise gubernatorial race in the state displacing a Republican.
Christopher ran a feisty campaign and secured some bipartisan support in her bid and had she won, she would have been the first Indian American to win a seat in the General Assembly and also the first Asian American to do so.
Christopher had earlier told IANS how many thousands of doors she had knocked on to make hers a familiar face to Republican voters in the district. She also garnered considerable support from Indian Americans nationwide.
