Indrani sent some money to a person in Guwahati, who in turn hired another person to keep track of Mikhail’s activities and to posion him whenever he got the chance, according to a police official privy to the investigation details.

The attempt failed, and the Mumbai police teams in Kolkata and Guwahati are trying to trace the man who was hired to kill Mikhail. The Mumbai-based man who worked as the conduit for the cash payment was being questioned.

Khar police officials have made Mikhail a key witness like his step brother Rahul Mukerjea who was Sheena's live-in partner. Police sources said his statements enabled them to add more stringent provisions to the case against Indrani and the other accused, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai.

The three are accused of murdering 24-year-old Sheena, Indrani's daughter from her first husband, and dumping the body in the forests of Raigad.

Mikhail also told the police that on April 25, 2012 -- the day after Sheena was killed -- he was called to Mumbai by Indrani on the pretext she wanted to discuss something important.

“She even sent him the flight ticket for Guwahati to Mumbai. It was the same day when Indrani and the other accused had disposed of Sheena’s body in the forests at Pen, Raigad,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

Mikhail said he went straight to Indrani’s residence at Worli, where he was given a drink laced with sedatives. Realising that something was wrong he excused himself, rushed out of the house and took a taxi to the airport.

“He took a flight to Guwahati and never came back to the city. Till this date, Mikhail has not revealed anything about this to anyone,” the police officer said.

Police are trying to find out why Mikhael kept silent all these years. They are also trying to gather corroborating evidence, like the sedative used in his drink and the details of his Mumbai-Guwahati flight ticket.

Mikhail has also claimed that he had written an email to Indrani's third husband Peter Mukerjea informing him that she is his mother.
