THE SUMMER placements exercise at IIM Lucknow (IIM-L) this year has fetched a record 312 offers from various national and international companies.

What’s more, as many as 19 international offers were made to IIM students, marking another first in summer placements at the management institute here.

The highest domestic stipend was estimated at Rs 50,000 per month with the international stipend put at a whopping 5,000 pounds (approx Rs 3.5 lakh).

This is again for the first time that IIM students would be making such good money in their internship period itself.

The four-day exercise, meant for postgraduate programme I (PGP-I) students, which saw as many as 80 top companies coming to the campus, and making offers to 278 students ended on November 8.

And when IIM-L’s placement cell collated the summer placement data, chairman, placements, Prof Pankaj Kumar couldn’t hide his smile.

“This is not only the best ever summer placement exercise but it also augurs well for the final placements. It shows that IIM-L’s brand value is increasing across the globe,” an elated Prof Pankaj Kumar told HT Live on Friday.

This year, IIM students also expressed a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the society.

“Several of our students this year have decided to join the development sector for their summer internships. This includes some non-government organisations and some have decided to join the planning commission too for their internships,” Prof Pankaj Kumar said. Besides, the students showed a general trend towards investment banking, private equity, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies, IT among others.

The students would now be leaving for their internships in April. The internships are for a period of 8 to 10 weeks.

The companies that arrived on the campus included the who’s who of the corporate and banking world. “There was Yahoo, JP Morgan, London, Baring Private Equity Limited, Deutesche Bank, Kotak Investment Bank, Glaxo Smithkline Beecham, Headstrong, Citi Group, Hong Kong, Johnson and Johnson, Deloitte Consulting among various others.

These companies were among the top recruiters with some taking more than one student for internships.

For IIM-L’s top brass such overwhelming response of companies to the summer placements exercise means that the “quality of its students” is “very high”.

“The companies conducted several rounds of interviews with our students before finalizing their selections. In most cases about five rounds of interviews were conducted. When the companies were finally satisfied with the talent of our students, were the offers made,” Prof Kumar added.
