Hundreds of demonstrators pelted the Danish embassy compound in Tehran with Molotov cocktails and rocks late on Monday, amid escalating Iranian protests over cartoons portraying the Prophet Mohammed.

Several petrol bombs were seen being hurled over the walls of the leafy compound, setting a tree alight. Rocks also smashed onto the roof of the embassy building.
Brief scuffles broke out with anti-riot police guarding the mission, as members of the Islamic hardline Basij militia -- some armed with iron rods which could be used as battering rams -- tried to close in on its main gate.
Firefighters were on hand to extinguish any flames, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
