The CM’s political adviser, Waheed ur Rehman Parra, confirmed to Hindustan Times that Sayeed has been taken to Delhi and said it was a routine checkup.

“Mufti sahib was a little uneasy in the morning. He was scheduled to travel to Delhi so he will go for a checkup,’’ Parra told Hindustan Times.

According to reports, the 79-year-old Sayeed was rushed to the national capital in a state aircraft and will be taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Sources close to Mufti said that the chief minister is asthmatic and had complained of shortness of breath. He had caught a cold during a tour to Srinagar on Tuesday.

Reports of Mufti’s illness have surfaced in the past as well and fuelled rumours that his daughter and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti might be sworn in as the new chief minister. Mehbooba, however, has denied any such move in interviews to various news channels.

Sayeed took over as the chief minister of a PDP-BJP alliance government in March this year.
