J&K prepares to free political detainees

Manmohan was keen to see the list finalised as soon as possible and the state government would complete it by the end of March.

Preparations are underway to free scores of political detainees in Kashmir under orders from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Friday.

"Those detainees who are not involved in heinous crimes are being discussed actively to formulate a list for their release," Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a statement.

Manmohan was keen to see the list finalised as soon as possible and the state government would complete it by the end of March, he said.

Singh last month asked officials to examine cases of detained political leaders in Kashmir and release those not facing serious charges.
