Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar has sought a fresh report on the status of the probe into Prof HS Sabharwal's death in college election violence at Ujjain, Raj Bhavan sources said on Wednesday.

"The governor has asked the state government for a fresh report on progress in the investigation as the information provided by it earlier was confined to a certain period", they said.

Several developments, including the arrest of two ABVP leaders have taken place in the past few days, they said adding that Jakhar wanted to know whether any problem was being faced by investigating agencies in initiating action against more suspects.

The move to seek another report seems to have been made in the backdrop of allegations of attempts by ruling BJP to "shield" those responsible for Sabharwal's death in an attack by unruly students at Madhav college in Ujjain on August 26.

The governor, who is the Chancellor of all universities in the state, had also asked Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to ensure prompt and impartial probe into the professor's death. Chouhan had also subsequently apprised Jakhar on the progress made in the investigation.

On September 3, a Raj Bhavan source has said that the governor has sought legal opinion on the Congress' demand to prosecute Chouhan for allegedly "interfering" in the probe.

Jakhar, who had voiced concerns over the episode, has said while the guilty should not be spared, innocent people should not be harassed by the police while probing the incidents.
