The need for voting right for NRIs had emerged as a major issue during a campaign conducted by the Jamaat Islami in the state and among the Malayalis working in the Gulf, Ameer of Jamaat Isliami Hind, Kerala, KA Siddiqu Hassan told a press meet in Thiruvananthapuram.
Centre's decision to grant dual citizenship to NRIs would not help the Malayali diaspora as the majority of them were in the Gulf countries where the host country did not grant citizenship to the emigrant community, he said.
He said this demand had been included in the representation submitted to Governor RL Bhatia.
